The Truth About Jacob Marley

On the first page of A Christmas Carol Charles Dickens assures the reader that “Marley was dead, to begin with.” But in this novel, cast as a memoir by Ebenezer Scrooge’s nephew, Fred, we learn that Marley was not dead that fateful night, but very much alive! This is the “truth” that Fred boldly states at the outset.

But Fred is writing more than an exposé. He records much of his own life and that of his singular uncle, as well as the exploits of the rakish Marley. It is the “Age of Steam,” and Scrooge quotes Marley as saying, “If a man cannot make his fortune in such times as these, he has no pluck at all.” Marley definitely has pluck. But he is fearless to a fault—and pays the price for it.

In The Truth About Jacob Marley the events of the original story are re-imagined and set against the panorama of the early Victorian era.
